REVIEW: Merlin - They Must Die GWN Records, 2001
7/10
Merlin - They Must Die - cover art Despite the fact that the first track of this album starts out with an absolutely horrible introductory sound (perhaps not quite as boring as those of Morbid Angel and other "Florida swamp bands" but still horrible) Merlin turns out to be a promising new act in the extreme death metal genre. Soundwise they are of course very influenced by Morbid Angel and the likes but they have a more aggressive touch than the Morbid we see today. What makes things even more interesting is that this Russian band has a female vocalist named Maria Abaza (also writer of their lyrics) with a voice even more extreme than most male death metal vocalists in the world and just as strong. The American death metal style sometimes has a tendency towards monotony but this is luckily not the case with Merlin whose composing skills help them to get past this problem in a nice way. The capacity of a female voice like Abaza's also helps them to create an atmosphere different from most other male-fronted bands. It´s a shame Merlin hasn´t had the chance to record an album before but the bitter truth stands fast that if you happen to live in a country like Russia the possibility of success is not as big as if you live in Sweden or another rich/world oppressor country (just to be on the safe side: I live in Sweden). The Russian queen of death has come to conquer the world with her disciples of fear and I think she is halfway there by now.
