REVIEW: Meshuggah - Rare Trax Nuclear Blast, 2001
8/10
Meshuggah - Rare Trax - cover art With four full-lengths, three mini albums and tours with Machine Head and Slayer behind them, the mighty Meshuggah of Sweden feel ready to release some rare tracks for their fans to cherish. Except for the previously unreleased recordings this album also contains the three tracks from their debut EP "Psykisk Testbild" (something like "Psychological Test Image") which was released on vinyl only in 1989. As there were only 1000 copies pressed the few lucky owners of it may become a bit angry with their heroes when they hear about this. Even these old tracks show a band with the potential to reach the top as they would also come to do even though "Debt Of Nature" sounds a little bit too much Metallica. It is no coincidence that Rolling Stone Magazine refers to Meshuggah as "one of the ten most important hard and heavy bands" because they are simply put an amazing band. Swedish death metal bands have always been known to break down barriers and while Therion and Tiamat went their separate ways to create new musical styles, Meshuggah would be one of the first to successfully mix punk/hardcore influences with death metal. If you are new to the band "Rare Trax" is probably not the best album to start off with but old fans would not want to miss out on this one.
