Oh, sweet nostalgia! Kurdt Vanderhoof and his preachers of the metal message are back again with the follow-up to the 2004 re-union "Weight Of The World". The new guys of the band have now had time to grow into their tasks, making "A Light In The Dark" slightly more of a coherent band effort. Former Savatage skin basher Jeff Plate has however stepped in to replace long-time drummer Kirk Arrington. A light in the dark is actually a clever title for the album, albeit it may not have been deliberate, as it shines bright with its intensity and well written songs in a time when most releases seem more like bad copies of worshipped idols than creations of their own. Metal Church have no intention of pushing the boundaries of music or metal into the 21st century either but the difference between them and most others who dwell in similar realms is that they are extremely talented song writers with many years of experience. This is a very traditional heavy metal album that smells, sounds and tastes like the 80s all the way through. In fact "A Light In The Dark" is one of the few positive surprises so far this year and the best Metal Church release since their heyday in the 80s. Recommended for everyone who enjoys the spirit of metal. Great work!
