The line-up of Metal Church anno 2004 looks a little bit different today than when they released their self-titled classic twenty years back. At that time they were one of the hottest upcoming bands on the American continent and their former guitarist John Marshall actually helped out Metallica during live shows. Today original members Kurdt Vanderhoof and Kirk Arrington remain but the most dramatic change is a shift of singers as "Weight Of The World" is the first album to feature former Rottweiller vocalist Ronny Munroe. He has a pretty traditional NWOBHM voice but he lacks in power on this recording and David Wayne's voice is something that I miss while listening to the album. Musically Metal Church has not changed beyond recognition but their sound is not as rough and thrashy as it used to be. They may be slightly softer and slightly slower but the basic riffs and song structures are still deeply rooted in the past. The magic of 1984 is long since gone I'm afraid but Metal Church fans are probably more than happy now that they release their first new studio album in five years. "Weight Of The World" is a solid collection of heavy / speed metal songs but the standard formula tendency is a little bit too strong to make it stand out in the heavy competition of today. Favorite picks: "Wings Of Tomorrow".
