REVIEW: Metallica - Master of puppets Elektra Records, 1986
10/10
Metallica - Master of puppets - cover art Master of puppets... Well, what can you say about this album. It's the favourite album among lots of Metallica fans and perhaps the best metal album ever made. If possible this release is even more aggressive than Kill 'em all and the sound quality has been improved several times. The music is still very technical and fast but there are some slower parts as well. The fourth track Welcome home is rather slow all the way through and is also one of the best songs on the album, really showing what James Hetfield can do with his voice. There are also a couple of extremely fast songs like Damage, Inc. and Disposable heroes and some heavier, slower ones like The thing that should not be. There are also a very nice instrumental song called Orion that is a true symphonic masterpiece in itself with great melodic parts written by Cliff Burton, who later died so tragically in a tour bus accident. The lyrics deal with war, violence, insanity and religion - the usual themes on the older Metallica albums. There is not a single bad song on this album but there very rarely is on a Metallica release. This album is very close to perfect - highly technical, very fast, aggressive and melodic. If you find an album as good as this you have to tell me about it right away!
