REVIEW: Metallica - Metallica Elektra Records, 1991
9.5/10
Metallica - Metallica - cover art This album has always been referred to as the black album since the cover is completely black with a picture of a snake that's impossible to see unless you hold the cd in the right angle to the light. This release seems to be the favourite Metallica album among non-metal fans and I have always wondered why. To me this is one of the more heavy Metallica albums even though it's not as fast as the previous ones. The fact that it's slower is probably the reason why people who don't like metal in general find this album to be rather good. Adding to this there are also two slow emotional ballads that very few people don't like - The unforgiven and Nothing else matters - both of them successful radio hits. These two songs really demonstrate what a great voice James Hetfield has. This album seems to be a bit sadder than the previous ones, both lyrically and musically. That could have something to do with the tragic death of the band's bass player Cliff Burton, who was replaced by Jason Newsted. However, this is a very good album and it contains the classic songs Enter Sandman and Sad but true as well as ten other tracks. This record has a little bit of everything - the usual aggressive and heavy Metallica music, slow ballads and fast melodic songs - , this is an album to buy even for those who are not real metal fans (are there really any?). The orchestration on Nothing else matters was arranged by Michael Kamen who was one of the brains behind the S&M recording. He also conducted the San Fransisco Symphony on that album and he has helped several other metal bands with orchestral arrangements, for example Queensryche. Another thing that's good about this release and Metallica in general is that you get a lot of good music for your money - this album consists of twelve tracks and lasts for over an hour, which unfortunately is rather unusual in modern music today.
