The new Metallica sound is
here to stay. Reload sounds a lot like Load but there are some differences -
Reload is a little faster and heavier and perhaps we can see traces of the old
Metallica coming back to life again (if we look really hard...). Those of you
who think Metallica has become too tame probably think they should change
their sound completely and go back to their old music but I have a feeling
that is not going to happen. A band has got to develop if they want to stay
popular and find new fans all over the world. If you continue playing the same
music all the way you will have the same fans although some of them will
probably grow tired of the music and leave them alone. If you develop there
will come new fans all the time who find the new style interesting. The risk
about changing musical direction is that you completely destroy the band's
music but Metallica has managed to continue producing great music year after
year even though they change their style now and then. The lyrics are similar
to the ones on Load and this is probably the direction Metallica is going to
take now - leaving their political aggressive lyrics behind them. When talking
about the development of Metallica's music you would have to mention James
Hetfield. His vocals has developed a lot from their first albums to the later
ones - he uses his voice in much more varied ways than before and really lifts
up the music. At least this is a very good record, what else can you say about
Metallica music. It's also almost as long as Load - thirteen tracks ranging
over more than 75 minutes.
