REVIEW: Metallica - S&M Elektra Records, 1999
10/10
Metallica - S&M - cover art The one who thought a symphony orchestra can´t be combined with a metal band is hereby proven wrong! This is an absolutely marvellous recording where Metallica is accompanied by the almost 100 man strong San Francisco Symphony, conducted by Michael Kamen, who has helped Metallica and other metal bands out before with orchestral arrangements. The powerful orchestra really brings Metallica's music to an even higher level than before and this is probably their best album so far. Only a few of the faster not so heavy songs from "Master of puppets" drowns a little in the massive orchestral music, but most of the other songs are even better now than played by Metallica alone. This is as good as music gets, combining the only two really true music genres - classic and metal. The songs are taken from all their previous albums except "Garage Inc." and "Kill 'em all" but there are also two new songs on this live recording, the radio hit "No Leaf Clover" and "Human", two songs that show that Metallica can still play the very best of music. Hopefully there will be a new real album out soon with these two on it. The first song on the first disc is "The Ecstacy of Gold", which some of you probably remember from the movie "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly". I also like the title of this release, S&M :). If you don´t already own this album you should buy it right away 'coz this is as good as music gets!
