REVIEW: Metallica - St. Anger Elektra Records, 2003
5/10
Metallica - St. Anger - cover art If there is one band that needs no introduction it would be Metallica. After having heard the two new tracks "No Leaf Clover" and "Human" on the "S&M" album back in 1999 I was looking forward to the next real studio album from the legendary band with a high level of anticipation. Of course I knew that it would be nothing like the first masterpieces but since I am one of those who find "Load" and "Reload" to be wonderful music as well it didn't really bother me that much. After several years of waiting, a period or rehab for James Hetfield and the departure of Jason Newsted, the new studio album has finally hit us. First off, "St. Anger" comes with a horrible looking cover art but you should not judge a book by its cover, right? Despite what many people think about albums such as "Load" and "Reload", Metallica have never been a band to follow trends or copy what other bands have done before and they have always been able to impress me positively with each single release so far. That is, until "St. Anger" reached me. This album is nothing but a big advertising campaign for modern American rock / metal mixed with some small remnants of what Metallica once were. The verse vocals of the title track are also more or less stolen from Megadeth, a band that Metallica have always thought of as their little brother. The difference now is that while Megadeth folded with their heads held high, it looks as if Metallica will have to go down their heads at ground level. For those of you who didn't like the last couple of albums from Metallica I can tell you that "St. Anger" is a lot more aggressive and filled with anger but that is about it. It seems as if the band tried so hard to sound more aggressive that they forgot about everything else. The vocals from Hetfield are nothing like what they used to be and if this is what he is going to sound like in the future he could easily be replaced with any other decent rock / metal vocalist from the modern school. The production has deliberately been done less clear but unlike some bands who know how to do this, Bob Rock and Metallica have failed big time. Decent is the keyword here - "St. Anger" sounds like a decent modern American rock / metal demo band. I feel sorry for Robert Trujillo who has jumped onboard a sinking ship and I feel sorry for Metallica but I totally respect them for what they have given to the world during the past twenty years. Metallica, rest in peace.
