The Italian underground band Mhorgen presents their three songs promo called “Promo 2005”. Although there´s no lack of talent and although several interesting ideas make the songs diversified, there are two main criticisms (besides the fact, that the sound is weak, but it is an underground promo, so I wouldn´t care too much):
The first and most important criticism is that Mhorgen mixes various styles (from old school heavy metal to progressive and nu-metal) in a way that leaves me unsatisfied. The mixture doesn´t always work equally well and every now and then it sounds half-baked.
The second criticism concerns the drums. Instead of powerful, driving metal-ish drum work, they sound tiny and weak. This is not only a problem in common, but especially when the drums have their prominent moments. For example: The weakness of drums kills the metal-ish feeling the listener got from a heavy guitar intro on "Magico", the second song. While the first two songs are more metal-ish, the third song "December Sun2 is different, it reminds me in some moments of my beloved Anathema. This shows that Mhorgen is generally capable of creating interesting and emotional songs. "December Sun" has prominent progressive elements but I wouldn´t have used (rare) growls to assist the clean male vocals in the refrain. I understand the use of rare growls from the artistic point of view, nevertheless somehow these growls disrupt the continuity of emotions that this song gives birth to. Diego K. Pierini is the male vocalist and he can be a promise for the future. Even though you can hear a (very) few insecurities, he does a good job and is able to create emotions.
Conclusion:
Good ideas, promising vocalist, emotional songs, production/sound must be improved, the drums are far too weak and tiny and less different styles or at least in a more fitting way. Personally I would like a full album with more songs in the vein of "December Sun".
