I was trembling in fear, like a maple leaf rocked by September´s breeze, pondering whether these guys conformed another cheap gothic metal band or not. Hmmm... but I hadn´t reasons to worry. “Nordic folk metal”, I read somewhere about Midnattsol... Finntroll booze mates? No, impossible... that girl in the cover, a misty picture... I´m going to stop the madness of words and attack the core of the whole thing: Midnattsol is a great band, in a nutshell. They mix metal –good gothic metal- with angelic female vocals and some folk elements the emotional way. Not the happy tunes featured by those bands most of you have in mind right now, but the evocative ones. Folk tunes, however, aren´t a constant item in “Where Twilight Dwells”; in several moments Midnattsol is a pure metal band, so there are rather changes between the folk stuff and metal, instead of a homogeneous mixture –except in some loose songs where this communion does exist-. It´s something that maybe in the next releases will be more worked on.
The singer Carmen is sister of Theatre of Tragedy´s former vocalist Liv Kristine, and her voice is not as high-pitched as Liv´s. In fact Carmen´s vocal touch reminds me Loreena McKennitt (without matching the Canadian´s intensity, certainly), and it´s without a doubt one of Midnattsol highlights. Her emotional seal is demonstrated especially in folkish tracks like third song “Unpayable Silence”, a delicate artwork in the vein of traditional, beautiful tunes from lost ages. The variation between folk sweet parts and strong metal pieces makes this album very entertaining. Sometimes they even resemble a medieval version of The Gathering, so to speak! Guitars are not only based on chords to remark the singer´s work, as it happens on so many gothic acts. Melodies are good enough to strengthen the body of the songs, and the drum parts are also remarkable, using powerful double bass drums here and there. Sound is perfect, thick and clean. Their musical skills, competent. A band to take seriously into account. Read the interview to come for more details on the music and thoughts of this German band (with Norwegian singer). A great surprise, really!
