This is a cd that left me very pleasantly surprised, I had never heard of Mindripper before just as I have not heard of many other extreme metal acts from France. One thing to bring up right off the bat is that this is most assuredly a black metal band, and while other influences creep in during some parts of the album it retains the black metal essence. The influence of which I speak would be the “groove” that saturates this album and allows it to stick out if only slightly in the over crowded black metal scene. There is a definite “dark” feel to the entire album which is in due in part to the speed at which the instruments are played and also in part to the production itself which is quite good, especially for a somewhat underground black metal band (sorry old school black metal fans, no ridiculously fast drumming and tin can production here). The vocals are always presented in a slightly echoing Black Metal shriek/rasp which surprisingly enough doesn’t become boring as the album progresses. I would say that every member of the band (even the bassist, that’s right you can even hear the bassist at times) does a good job in making this a dark, semi melodic black metal outing. The guitarists are especially notable as well as the drummer who while not being a Horgh or Hellhammer by any means still does a good job. I must say that this is one of the better straight black metal cds that I have heard in a while however at only 41:14 it leaves you wanting more. To sum up this is a great black metal release and I will definitely follow this bands progress in the future, this is a recommended album for any fan of black metal music in general.
