I don’t like to give albums ten on ten unless the album totally deserves the rating. With Ministry’s “The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste” it deserves it. Ministry as a band has released some great music, and some rather uninspired material as well. The late eighties and early nineties was when the band hit its peak. I have nothing against what Al Jourgensen and company has recorded in the last while, but nothing compares to “The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste”. This album is more than just an album, it’s a lesson for your mind. Starting off with “Thieves” the punishing Industrial begins. The machinegun riffing and heavy drumbeats make Thieves an instant classic. The chorus is a thunderous blast of hardcore. I especially like the sampling throughout Thieves, which is courtesy of the drill Sargent from the movie “Full Metal Jacket”. As you listen to this whole LP, Ministry take you through 9 different tracks. Each song is distinct and brilliant, being very warped in their delivery. Al Jourgensen’s manic vocals shred through “Burning Inside”. While “Never Believe” builds on the border of Urgent. “Breathe” is an awesome track that gets your blood pumping, and once the drums roll in you can be sure that the pit would start circling. The chorus then would bring a fight out of anyone within a mosh pit. After listening to this disk, it gets into your psyche. “The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste” proves that Ministry is an entity. Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker are probably too smart for their own good. Their aggression isn’t in your face, but it festers within you, “Cannibal Song” is the prime example of this. It could almost be an anthem song for the strange people in the world who are fighting themselves. “Dream Song” would be my choice for background music during an apocalyptic storm of destruction. Very dark and eerie. So let your angst build with yourself, then once you’re in the pit, let it fuckin’ ride. Ministry has been copied, but no one has touched “The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste” in the Industrial world.
