REVIEW: Mirrorthrone - Of Wind And Weeping Red Stream, 2003
6.5/10
Mirrorthrone - Of Wind And Weeping - cover art Mirrorthrone is a one man experimental black metal project formed in mid 2000 by Vladimir Cochet who has been playing with bands like Weeping Birth and Unholy Matrimony. After having recorded a four track demo he put the project on ice for two years before recording new material and signing a deal with the American label Red Stream. While the music of Mirrorthrone is rooted in black metal this is much more varied with plenty of influences from both classical and ambient music. It is a very atmospheric release but also progressive and chaotic. It would be to easy to say that this is a black metal album because there is so much more going on. I would prefer to call it extreme symphonic metal instead. The music is pretty enjoyable most of the time but there is one problem with the recording. This kind of orchestral music is in need of a good quality sound in order to be really impressive and unfortunately the keyboards sound a little cheap here and there on this album. There are highlights as well though and I particularly like the male / female duet in "Beyond The Mirrorthrone" with the following massive guitar riff after which comes a more chaotic "black metal" section with more clean vocals. As you realize it is not easy to categorize the music of Mirrorthrone. Therefore I advice you to give them a listen if what you have read here sounds interesting.
