REVIEW: Misanthropic - Soulreaver Xtreem Music, 2003
7/10
Misanthropic - Soulreaver - cover art When you receive an album from Xtreem Music you usually don't have to guess twice to know what there is to find. Misanthropic is another brutal death metal act who have found a sanctuary at the Spanish label. Hailing from Germany this band features or have featured former members of bands like Avion, Agathodaimon, Mirrored Mind and Nocte Obducta. To simply label them as a brutal death metal band does not really do them justice because here there is more than just brutal grunts and aggressive guitar riffs. A massive wall of guitars and blastbeats make way for slower, more atmospheric sections, inbetween which you can listen to both groovy and melodic tunes. Just listen to the wonderfully written song "The Play" and you'll realize the vast creative potential within this band. Maintaining a well-defined balance between the brutal and the atmospheric, the aggressive and the melodic, Misanthropic will strike you as a very intrigueing band. Far from being predictable you still feel comfortable and secure with the twists and turns of every song. The debut album of these Germans will probably be of interest to those of you who like bands such as God Dethroned, Demigod and Centinex. Misanthropic sound quite modern and fresh but there is still something old and familiar about their music. Not exactly something that makes me jump up from my chair of excitement but yet another well executed death metal release from Xtreem Music.
