I enjoy a lot of classical music and have spent a lot of time studying it, from medieval chants, J. S. Bach and Wagner to modern music. Taking that into account together with my love for the heavier genres one might think that the combination of opera and metal would appeal to me. That is however not the case and I am not sure why I don’t really like that genre. The Swedish band Miscellany plays a mixture of both melodic and hard metal with female opera vocals. On their single “Catch-22” they present three well performed tracks with great production. The male singer is delivering aggressive growls that are really quite good and the songs are well written. The only thing that makes me hesitate about this band is the opera vocals. Vocalist Jenny Persson is not bad and when she’s singing in the lower register it is really pleasant to listen to but the higher notes are really painful to listen to with its sharp overtones. Still, I am almost convinced by this band, and that is a really good grade coming from me. All you crazy people out there who enjoy opera metal should listen to Miscellany.
