REVIEW: Misericordia - Erase The Skies Downfall Records, 2002
7/10
Misericordia - Erase The Skies - cover art After having experimented with both cello and female vocals the Swedish band Misericordia settled for a more brutal and primitive sound and secured a contract with the small native label Downfall Records. This MCD was recorded in the Endarker Studio in Norrköping with producer Devo Andersson (Sargatanas Reign, ex-Marduk) who did a good job bringing out the best from these guys. The five tracks on this cd do all sound very Swedish in the sense that they are fast and furious black metal in the early Dark Funeral vein. However it is not all about speed when it comes to Misericordia. To prevent boredom from setting in they have included calmer and more atmospheric elements as well in the songs and even when they do focus on fast riffs and blasting drums there is almost always a melody line running in the background. All of this not only makes "Erase The Skies" a sharp thorn in the eye for the lovers of Christ but also a highly varied release which sounds unusually mature for such a young band. A good solid debut from one of the most promising upcoming extreme metal bands in Sweden at the moment. Their first full-length album is now ready and is awaiting a release in early 2004. Unfortunately it has been delayed because of problems with the printing company. Stand-out tracks: "Satan's Servant".
