REVIEW: Misteltein - Rape In Rapture No Fashion Records, 2000
7/10
Misteltein - Rape In Rapture - cover art Misteltein is a new very promising black metal band from Sweden (not Norway!). The band was formed in 1996 and recorded their first demo "Spawn Of The Phantom Moon" in 1998 which was received very well and was compared in Close-Up Magazine to early Emperor. The band was then signed to No Fashion Records and this is their debut album. Misteltein is musically very different from a band like Dark Funeral. Their music is not as thick and brutal but more atmospheric and keyboard based, perhaps closer to bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. Slower classically influenced passages with piano/keyboards in the Dimmu Borgir style can also be found in a couple of songs. "Rape In Rapture" is not as good as recent Cradle albums but if you were to compare this to the first cradle album the sound quality is ten times better. The vocals are changing between a deep, dark voice and a brighter, screechy one and is better than the average black metal band. Extremely violent yet melodic and catchy album with 60 minutes of hatred from a young and very promising newcomer on the black metal scene. The album was recorded at Sweden´s Studio Underground. It will be very interesting to see what Misteltein can achieve with their next album.
