REVIEW: Mithras - Forever Advancing... Legions Golden Lake Productions, 2002
8.5/10
Mithras - Forever Advancing... Legions - cover art It is well said on the flyers that influences of Mithras were the following bands : Morbid Angel, Nile, and Hate Eternal. This line explains it all. But with my duty to replenish all of your 'paragraph cravings', I will give detailed information about the release of this one great young band from UK. First off, let's not set aside the production. A load of solid skull-krushing, and dust pounding heaviness to soil down your boxers! Anyhow, what is the use of stating those influences above if they won't go in the same path as the mentioned bands?! Mithras will be running against time with their incredible (and powerful) double bass and warlike drumming. I think this was the main highlight on this debut. Followed next was the speed of light shredding solos provided to us Ben White and Leon Macey. The latter was not a simple human, but a fukking machine! I can't Imagine handling the skin peeling lead guitars and as well handling the drum massacres on this album! Vocals were the typical -yet very boring- growl that we all hear since ages - but so what?!!! Is there any difference between listening on this young band's vocals in compare to the vocals made by the three mentioned bands above?! Hell no. And well, the info I have was that the vocalist of Mithras was also the one providing vocals for the previously reviewed band, Serenade. However, both bands were too different to be associated with each other. Epic is the theme of this band. So expect relevant (and poetic) scripts to be found on the booklet. I think Sloping Altars heavily reminds me of Morbid Angel - both song title and riffs! Well, I am not bothered on the band's use of keyboards on some of the selected tracks. We should put in mind that Mithras was so serious to make this material as a concept album - maybe I am correct enough to call it as a "Concept Album", ha! My only complain was that, there were two songs in here that sounds literally the same. First song heard could be better with a somewhat talking harmonics (urk!), but the next one could be obvious that the 'brilliant' idea was just taken from the previous song. The least thing to do is to add this breathtaking Death Metal square into your collection. Catching the flyers stated that Mithras is the band of the future… in this side I can't really agree. Mithras has released a good debut album but to won that tag is too early in my opinion. Not to mention that Nile, and the genius Mr. Rutan have just recently went out a much even futuristic approach than Mithras. Perhaps, I can say that this band might be ONE OF the futuristic bands if they can hold and deliver more intensity on their next opus (cut that casio crap!). Anyone should wait and be a judge.
