REVIEW: Mjölnir - Whispering Sorcery Cold Blood Industries, 2001
6/10
Mjölnir - Whispering Sorcery - cover art After the gothic doom metal explosion in the mid-90s an infinite number of bands have started creating emotional metal with both clean female vocals and male growling. Some of them have done it exceptionally well while others have failed completely. The Dutch band Mjölnir falls somewhere inbetween. I really like the melancholic atmosphere of their new album but it never gets real interesting. The female vocalist doesn't have the purity needed in her voice and it's only in the very few more aggressive parts that it sounds interesting enough. The male growling also leaves a lot more to wish for but I still think this band could produce something better than this. There is a lot of keyboards in the Mjölnir sound and this, together with a few nice heavy riffs, is what makes you want to listen to the next track until you reach the end of the album. I do not doubt that the members of Mjölnir do have the musical skills needed to compose great music but they will have to improve on the vocals and the melodies in general. The music on this album is far too abstract and non-catchy to make a lasting impression, at least on me.
