The German band Mob Rules was formed in 1994 and judging by
the band name they are apparently big fans of Black Sabbath. Their first two
albums were released on the German label Limb Music and consisted of pretty
much standard Helloween metal but they have now taken a step forward in their
career with a new record deal and "Hollowed Be Thy Name", the third album
from the band, shows more variety and other musical influences as well. Old
fans don't need to worry that much though. The power metal vibe is still
there and there are no radical changes as such. I would describe Mob Rules on
this album as a power metal version of Savatage. They have adopted some of the
hard rock song structures and vocal lines of Savatage but without turning
their back on their power metal roots. Fans of bands like Helloween, Virgin
Steele and Stratovarius should be able to enjoy most of what is presented on
this disc. If you are one of the guys who want nothing but speed then you
might be disappointed with this album though since there are plenty of power
ballads. The most impressive song is definitely the bombastic opening title
track which has a huge hit potential and a mighty sing-along chorus. Mob Rules
have developed their song writing skills for many years now and have come a
long way. A solid third release from the band that should appeal to most fans
of modern power / heavy metal. Stand-out tracks: "Hollowed Be Thy Name",
"(In The Land Of) Wind And Rain".
