REVIEW: Moonsorrow - Suden Uni Spinefarm Records, 2004
8/10
Moonsorrow - Suden Uni - cover art After having spent several years as a demo band the Finnish warriors of Moonsorrow was offered a chance to release their first album "Suden Uni" through Plasmatica Records in 2001. This album has now been re-issued by their current label Spinefarm Records, including new beautiful artwork by Dark Tranquillity's visual master Niklas Sundin. The songs have also been remastered at the well-known Finnvox Studio by Mika Jussila. This gives their old material a new powerful appearance, a strong argument for fans of the band to acquire this version of the album as well. There are two other equally strong arguments. First of all there is a bonus DVD with two promotional videos and the band's live performance from the 2003 Tuska Open Air Festival. Second there is a bonus track, "Tulkaapa Äijät" which is based on a Finnish traditional song. "Suden Uni" is a perfect example of what makes Moonsorrow such a successful band. It combines epic black metal with melancholic Finnish folk melodies in a very nice way. Viking era Bathory and Thyrfing come to mind while listening to them but Moonsorrow comes with a cleaner production and a somewhat lighter and happier sound. The vocals are mostly in the traditional viking / black folk vein though. Compared to the earlier bands in the genre Moonsorrow's music also strikes me as more orchestral and the keyboards play an important role in their composing. Sometimes bombastic, sometimes melancholic, sometimes violent, the music of Moonsorrow has many different colors which further adds to the common interest in their concept I think. Sometimes the songs lose focus but "Suden Uni" is a wonderful adventure into the exciting world of epic and pagan metal.
