REVIEW: Moonspell - Irreligious Century Media, 1996
6.5/10
Moonspell - Irreligious - cover art "Perverse... Almost Religious" is a pretty lame intro track of a pretty lame album, if I were to comment (which I am). One of the most MTV-like songs of gothic metal is up next: "Opium". Personally, I'm not really into the Moonspell sound, and, I also have to say, that this particular album is not doing much for their image as far as I'm concerned either. Although songs like "Awake", "For A Taste Of Eternity" and "Mephisto" do have some interesting passages here and there, in general, they don't offer the excitement music in general is supposed to. The entire concept of the record revolves mainly around moving towards explosive passages from slower ones. There's not a single song on here that manages to impress me enough to grade the album any higher. It is clear that these songs weren't written in like 5 minutes, but it is also very clear that a lot less heart was put into it than studio hours. It's just plain music-science on a basic form. "Subversion" for ex. is not at all exciting and not at all interesting to listen to. Even these kinds of songs have to have their hooks. Otherwise why bother? The only track I liked is the closing song, "Full Moon Madness", but even this one has got its lame and irritating bits (not too many though) - if all the songs were this good, I would probably grade the record around 9. One other thing I personally hate about these songs is the fact that they're all very mechanical (in a bad way). Kovenant and Conception for ex. have done songs that lacked mobility and were very mechanical in orchestration, but have balanced everything just right in the end, and thus made brilliant music. Moonspell doesn't manage to do this on this record. Unfortunately, I would say.
