REVIEW: Moonspell - The Antidote Century Media, 2003
8.5/10
Moonspell - The Antidote - cover art Those of you who have read my Moonspell reviews at this website might be in for a little surprise this time. Those of you who have not, well, never mind, read them if you wish. "The Antidote" is definitely one of the most highly anticipated metal releases of 2003 and the opening track shows a lot of promise right from the very beginning of the brand new album from Portugal's finest musical export. If you have ever been worried about Moonspell leaving their metal roots behind you should be relieved because that is not the case. "The Antidote" is one of the heaviest albums the band has produced so far but in contrast to thundering bass and heavy guitar riffing there is as always lots of melody and atmosphere to enjoy. I have never before been able to understand the greatness of the post-Wolfheart releases from the band but perhaps I am about to be converted at this very moment. Gothic rock / metal has never been more popular than today and I would be surprised if this was not to be the most successful Moonspell album in their career so far. Old fans of the band will not be disappointed with this release and neither will fans of HIM, Sentenced or Tiamat. Whether you enjoy the aggressive growling of the opening track, the calm soothing ending of the album or the driving rhythms of "Capricorn At Her Feet" you will probably in the end come to fall in love with this album just like you have with any other Moonspell release. A powerful production job from Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced...) at the Finnvox Studios in Finland further helps in making this a very impressive release. Since bass player Sergio Crestana left the band shortly before they were supposed to enter the studio, Amorphis' own Niclas Etelävuori added his bass lines to the album. His contribution is perhaps not what the album will be remembered for but it is at least worth mentioning. Now, it is not only about music. Included on the album you will find a full version of "The Antidote" novel by Portuguese writer José Luís Peixoto as well as some video material. It is wonderful to see different arts coming together like this and I hope this is not the last time we get to experience something like that. Moonspell's music has always been about touching hearts and that is definitely what they have done this time. Stand-out tracks: "In And Above Men", "Antidote", "Capricorn At Her Feet" and "A Walk On The Darkside".
