The death metal pioneers
Morbid Angel had by now reached the letter 'C' on their journey through the
alphabet. I must say that it would have been so much more interesting if
letters like 'X' and 'Q' would have been earlier in the alphabet. To
follow up a masterpiece and classic like "Blessed Are The Sick" is not an
easy task but Trey and company managed to make most fans happy with the
release of yet another top notch death metal album. Pete Sandoval's world
class drumming, Trey's soaring guitar solos and the monstrous growling vocals
from David Vincent makes this album a wonderful experience for any death metal
fan, especially if you appreciate more technical than melodic song writing.
"Covenant" is perhaps also the most varied Morbid Angel release and there
are even some "clean" vocals used on the final track "God Of Emptiness"
which you will probably either love or hate. David Vincent may not have the
most unique voice in the world but he uses it very well and it is powerful as
few others. A classic in the history of death metal that you should have.
There are no tracks that you grow tired of on this album and I can listen to
it over and over again without losing interest in it which is highly unusual
when it comes to this genre. The production is perfect, giving the album that
unique Morbid Angel atmosphere which is particularly strong on the early
albums from the band. I don't know why but I find these early Morbid Angel
releases to be cozy. Can death metal be cozy? Should death metal be cozy?
Well, you decide but I for sure love this
album.
