REVIEW: Morbid Angel - Gateways To Annihilation Earache Records, 2000
8.5/10
Morbid Angel - Gateways To Annihilation - cover art Morbid Angel has always been considered one of the premier death metal bands from the US when speaking about the more brutal style that reigns in the south. This new release from them shows a band that has lost a little of the initial energy and aggression with "only" a heavy sound and monster growling left. I´m not saying that they´re lousy or anything like that because they sure are not as fans of US death metal surely already know. Morbid Angel equals slow and doomy death metal style with pounding drums and screaming guitar solos that will cause your ears to bleed. Their sound is mighty and powerful still and there are some pretty good songs with nice technical guitarwork and melodies. Morbid Angel at their best is really impressive but there are perhaps not as many of these old golden moments on this album as we are used to see from them. Hardcore fans of the band will have no problem accepting it though because they have not turned soft and I doubt anyone ever thought they would. Still this is brutal death metal done very well even though you might expect more from an established act like Morbid Angel. One final comment is necessary I think: this kind of music is much more suited for a live performance than being listened to on the stereo. The production is of course very good as always when Jim Morris has been involved.
