Morbid Sacrifice integrates many groove laden passages into a sluggish more Immolation-style death metal framework, that is, death metal which is a good deal slower than many of their contemporaries but nevertheless contains the trademark growling, double bass drumming, and down tuned guitars. The real thing that sets Morbid Sacrifice apart from other death metal bands is their overall style; this is represented well in the second track of Severed Death where the opening riff could just as well fit into a Judas Priest song. There is some commendable guitar playing on this album as well as some very audible and very catchy bass lines. The vocals seem slightly reminiscent of Barnes-era Cannibal Corpse, just not as deep and not as well executed making them forgettable and at times a little annoying. The drumming is fairly standard death metal fare and there are times when it sounds as though the drums go off tempo which is not a fatal flaw for the album but it definitely makes for a more disjointed listening experience. The production on Severed Death is not abysmal but it is definitely not great, overall the sound is muddy and the drums sound slightly muted throughout the album. Morbid Sacrifice have made an intriguing album but not an entirely memorable one, unfortunately. However, I believe that this release shows potential and it is a pity that the band broke up after this one CD. I believe the maturation of their sound could have yielded quite positive results but this one, for me, misses the mark.
