Morbius exist since 1997, but just in 2003 they managed to record and publish their first release: "Morbivs". Band's history is full of ups and downs, line-up changes and other problems, but core members of the band stud up all these difficulties and are here now with this CD. There are 7 songs in total, included intro and outro. Guys like to state Death, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary and Carcass as their main influences. And, hold your breath: Floridian styled Death Metal can obviously be found here in its well developed form and seriously played! Early nineties live in early 2000, hehe. For sure there is potential and quality here for all Death Metal lovers. Old school spirit is blooming, played very tight. Perhaps the music is not the most original you’ve ever heard, but it has its own ideas and streams of flow you can get into easily. Nice breaks and changes of speed and riffs highlight change of emotions during the course of songs and the album. Thus, the atmosphere is vibrant and interesting, as the boundaries of Death Metal genre allow. The vocals are also very good. Reminds of Chuck Schuldiner a bit. Although the drums are not mind-blowing they know how to create good occasional thunder as well, and instead of posting up by speed they serve as a solid foundation for rest of instruments.
My suggestion is to open your eyes for the 3rd track. Main minuses of album are mostly to be found in the production area. Drums sound even childish sometimes, especially bass drums and snare kit. Also, although everything is very clear and well hearable it sounds too plastic for my taste (Ok, I love early Immortal, so what?) and lacks in power because of it. Yet, this is the thing that’s most easy to change on next release. This goes for rudiment CD cover as well. It’s noticeable that this is the band's first material, as some parts are cliché in difference to overall impression, which is that this band has something own to offer. So, it will be very interesting to hear Morbius’ next material and I hope we will not wait for it long as we waited for Morbivs. The band is announcing lots of concerts all over Portugal, so if you’re near there’s a good chance to see them live, preferably without soft production.
