REVIEW: Morgana Lefay - Grand Materia Black Mark Production, 2005
7.5/10
Morgana Lefay - Grand Materia - cover art After two albums for Noise Records under the Lefay monicker, Sweden's heavy metal stalwarts Morgana Lefay have now switched back to their original name, securing a new deal with their former label Black Mark Production. It has been five years since we last heard new material from the band but not much has changed. Time takes its toll on many bands who have been around for as long as Morgana Lefay have (they started out way back in 1986) but they have managed to defend themselves against the attacks of modern trends and record label bosses telling them in which direction to move. They have stuck to their original concept of straight-forward classic heavy metal that nods towards the American style of power metal with many noticable thrash metal tendencies. One such might be the rather rough edged vocals from long-time frontman Charles Rytkönen who have colored all the band's albums thus far and remains an important bridge in the Morgana Lefay wall of sounds. Adding a piece of drama to the songs, he shows no signs of decline and provides nice vocal melodies as usual. "Grand Materia" has a few moments where Metallica's self-titled album comes to mind but most of the time they sound like Morgana Lefay and none other. It is a well composed and structured album and a confident return to life.
