REVIEW: Morgenstern - Fuego Napalm Records, 2004
6.5/10
Morgenstern - Fuego - cover art With bands like In Extremo, Subway To Sally and Saltatio Mortis, Germany has a very strong and vivid folk metal scene closely linked to the country's gothic / medieval communities. Morgenstern is however one of the bands that I have not been in contact with until now even though this is their fourth full-length album for Napalm Records since the band's inception back in February 1998. Today the band consists of six members who share traditional instruments such as flute, clarinete, crumhorn, shawn and of course also the usual electronic instruments. The songs on "Fuego" all follow a similar pattern which is a little bit different than what is characteristic most other bands in the genre. They are driven forth by very heavy guitar and bass walls and on top of this the folk music influences have been added for extra spice. The lyrics are all in German which surely scares off potential fans as well as win them over. Almost all vocals are done by the male vocalist Rico but on "Carneval" a female vocalist steps in and does a good job. The singing in that song actually sounds like it comes right out of the Eurovision Song Contest but the metallic music tells us that Morgenstern belong elsewhere. The male vocals are similar to what gothic metal bands in the Lacrimosa vein present and overall Morgenstern borrow elements from several different genres but don't fail to add something of their own to their sound. "Fuego" combines elements from the past with the sounds of the future in a very nice way but mid-way into the album it feels as if you have heard it all before. This is Morgenstern's biggest problem right now and they need to overcome this boundary in order to create music that will last.
