Morgion is one of the longest running American doom metal bands and after a long time of dwelling in the shadows they have now returned with their first album since Solinari was released in 1999. Having left Relapse they are now part of the avantgarde and exclusive team at Dark Symphonies, one of the most admirable smaller metal labels in my opinion. Morgion was formed in 1990 but they have not exactly been the most productive band this world has seen. "Cloaked By Ages, Crowned In Earth", their third full-length album thus far, offers the listener a long and soothing journey into darkness and melancholy. Pale mist rises above a meadow of withering flowers as Morgion creates a painting of sounds where dark beauty meets pain and suffering. A symphony for tormented souls, consisting of slow, churning agony but also nice guitar melodies and a few well placed aggressive outbursts. This is a well-balanced high quality recording but just like all other albums that have been released by Dark Symphonies, Morgion is not for everyone. If you are one of the strangely made up souls that like tears and agony however, and who doesn't, then this is definitely for you. A little bit like a mix of My Dying Bride and Green Carnation, this album marks a new chapter in the Morgion story. Salty water drips slowly towards the ground as the mourning hour begins.
