“All dead here” hasn´t many things in common with the True Norwegian Black Metal scene, at least musically speaking. The promo sheet stated there were some links in between, but I don´t agree, really. Having read on it things as “´All dead here...´ will appeal to forward thinking metal fans of Mayhem, Arcturus and Emperor as well as fans of classic metal such as Judas Priest, Celtic Frost and Slayer” I´m still asking myself where some of those “appealing elements” can be found. Definitely, the promo sheet isn´t very accurate. Yes, of course, some classic black metal influences are noticeable here and there when the album is played, but Morgul plays a very modern brand of black metal. So forget about listening to another tribute band nor anything similar here. Dark touches, fiddles and varied synths appear every now and then, so it´s pretty evident we are not going to hear a Darkthrone part. II nor similar things. And that´s good; Morgul experiment with a wide range of elements in order to create a beast able to describe dark visions of a desolate world, so to speak. Violins, clean voices in the vein of Alice In Chains, gloomy guitar melodies... mid tempos rule the land here, despite some double bass drums loom behind the music from time to time.
The common denominator throughout the notes of the album is, however, black metal, but clad in modern patterns rather than immersed in traditional tunes. I can see manifold traces of other bands; the intro makes me think about some Limbonic Art synthesizer lines, and the second track is quite similar to Diabolical Masquerade´s “Death´s Design” musical approach. The sound is quite powerful and clean, impulsed mainly by guitars. This album is bold and interesting, but as a whole I perceive a certain lack of highlights and magic; quite often the music just is there, without telling nothing really appealing to the listener. “All dead here...” tries to do something different without bad results. Don´t lose their trace...
