REVIEW: Mortifer - If Tomorrow Comes Valiant Music, 2000
6.5/10
Mortifer - If Tomorrow Comes - cover art Mortifer is a Russian band playing very fast thrash metal that sometimes has a real hard-hitting flow but other times it sounds plain boring like so many other acts relying mainly on speed. The opening and title track has some very nice heavy riffs that are followed by several nice song passages in the same style later on the album. Here I will go again and pick on the vocals being should we say improveable. I don´t mind black metal vocals from bands like Old Man´s Child or death vocals from Cannibal Corpse or opera vocals from Therion but this guy sounds like something between clean singing and growling, just as if he hasn´t made up his mind and tries on both at the same time. The result is far from satisfying. The rest of the album shows three very skilled musicians working well together but as I´ve mentioned before they need to rely less on the speed. A more melodic approach or at least a little more dynamic playing with more exciting heavy riffs would be nice for them. It wouldn´t kill them to let the thrashy sound go for a second or two either. The album does have a few killer moments though like the amazing powerful intro of "Slave Of Fate" (the rest of the song is great as well). Except for their own songs they have also included a cover version of Running Wild's "Realm Of Shades" on the album. It was recorded and mixed by the guitarist/vocalist Sergey Novikov at Black Magic Studio in Kostroma, Russia, December 1998-January 1999. It was also produced by Novikov and mastered by Sergey Titov at Saturday Mastering Studio.
