REVIEW: Mortiis - The Grudge Earache Records, 2004
8.5/10
Mortiis - The Grudge - cover art Those of you who have downloaded the clip of the single off this album from the Earache website already may think that Mortiis have gone commercial and sold out. Well, you're wrong. "The Grudge", as an album, is perhaps the least commercial Mortiis album to this date. It is the heaviest, most extreme and difficult to grasp release the Norwegian once black metaller has produced. Sure, there are hints to both Marilyn Manson and harsh techno but that is far from the whole truth. It has been three years since "The Smell Of Rain" was released and many things have changed. The line-up remains almost constant, featuring guitarists Asmund Sveinunggard and Levi Gawron Troite but on drums we now get to hear Leo Troy instead of the previous skinbasher Svein Traserud. Compared to "The Smell Of Rain", the musical concept has now been upgraded. While the previous album was pretty much an electro-darkwave affair with some heavy guitars, "The Grudge" has a much rougher industrial edge and displays more aggressive electronics unlike anything heard on previous Mortiis releases. There are more complex song arrangements found here and the almost hypnotic atmosphere of many tracks is sure to take a choke-hold on the listener. Evolution is often good, let's just hope that his fans know it as well. "The Smell Of Rain" is still my favorite Mortiis album to this date but I am glad to see that he is able to renew himself. It tells of hope for the future. Mortiis is back with a big bang and if you have the chance to catch his act on upcoming tours do not sit in front of your TV at home. There is more to life than American TV shows for braindeads. Stand-out tracks: "Broken Skin", "The Grudge", "Le Petit Cochon Sordide", "Asthma".
