Mortuary Drape is one of the most well-known bands in the Italian extreme metal underground, having formed in 1986 and released their debut album "All The Witches Dance" in 1994 for the Greek Unisound label. A long row of musicians have come and gone throughout the years with the only constant force frontman "Wildness Perversion". Their latest album "Buried In Time" is graced by a very nice looking cover artwork job courtesy of the gifted Polish designer Graal who has worked with bands like Behemoth and Astarte just to mention a few. It reflects the band's extreme metal and their occult imagery and lyrics very well I believe. Musically Mortuary Drape have opted for an old-school sound dressed in a modern production as they recorded the album at the Italian AlphaOmega studio. The songs are built mostly around chopping guitar riffs dwelling in the twilight zone between black, death and thrash metal. They do not limit themselves to the boundaries of one specific genre but forge their own style by personalizing their own recipe as they see fit. "Wildness Perversion" adds something extra himself as he uses his voice very well, belching out black metal screams as well as brutal growling.
Fans of brutal, mid-paced death metal with influences from the darker side who are looking for interesting music to quench their thirst for pentagrams and black magic will surely find the new Mortuary Drape album to be worth the money. Although far from breathtaking they present some noteworthy ideas and toil around in a musical landscape where few bands dare enter today. Avantgarde Music is the name of the label for a reason. There is also a reason why Mortuary Drape has been around for almost twenty years to share their dark visions with those who understand them.
