It's Motörhead. What more can be said, really? Arguably still a force for good in the realm of Metal, Lemmy and the boys are going strong after all these years. Surely this must be their 90th live presentation, though, right? Something like that.... It may actually be only their 7th official live release, for those counting at home. Too many bootlegs exist to count 'em all.
Better Motörhead than Dead: Live at Hammersmith was recorded at the band's 30th anniversary show on June 16, 2005, 24 years after the band appeared at the Hammersmith Apollo theater and recorded No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith. Are there any surprises now? Not really. The double album sports a mix of old and new and none of the classics are omitted. Not really, anyway. For the casual fan this is as good a place as any to get acquainted with one of Metal's fiercest and longest running acts. As Lemmy oft says to start their concerts: "We are Motörhead. We play rock-n-roll." So it is and likely ever will be.
It is worth noting that the sound recording offers excellent clarity and real production values. One could attribute a certain "clean" factor to this record, but that would be missing the point. Just because the recoding itself sounds good doesn't mean the music is any different. No, the content is still filthy as all Hell, just with sonic levels to more properly accompany the onslaught that is Motörhead. Not essential but solid nonetheless.
