REVIEW: Motörhead - Stage Fright (DVD) Steamhammer Records, 2006
8/10
Motörhead - Stage Fright (DVD) - cover art This concert was shot at the Philipshalle in Düsseldorf, Germany on December 7, 2004 and starts with Lemmy plainly stating "We are Motörhead. We play rock and roll." And then the Rock drops with really good sound quality and excellent visuals as captured by 23 high definition cameras under the direction of Sven Offen. Is a 2-DVD chronicle of this long lived band really necessary, especially when you consider that arguably the band's two most popular songs -- "Ace of Spades" and "Overkill" -- sound much the same until the lyrics cue in the listener? Probably not, but like their perspective of "everything louder than everything else" excess is clearly in practice here. Who knew that 30 years of such madness would have treated the band so well? Probably not Lemmy, actually, who is on his second Phil (20+ years!) and fourth or so drummer. Aside from the ~90 minute concert, which is only without Mikkey Dee's standard drum solo, there are quite a few nice extras here. The best of these has to be the "L.A. Special," though, which has musicians praising Lemmy and the boys. Such luminaries include Kerry King (as if you didn't know), Ronnie James Dio (duh!), Dave Grohl (right), Carmine Appice (too many to mention), Chris Jericho (Fozzy) and still many others. The final song is set up with "Once again our name is Motörhead. We play rock and roll." Then the staple "Overkill" is unleashed and it's all over but the crying. This is yet another high value item from our friends at SPV. Check 'em out and give 'em some much deserved business. Tell 'em Tartarean Desire sentcha, while you're at it.
