In the recent explosion of metal into the mainstream, many bands seem to be putting on airs or taking themselves too seriously. That’s why this is a perfect time to Motive to emerge: they play heavy metal that is aggressive, yet still catchy and fun. Frontman Steve Buschart certainly has something to say, but he’s not trying to shove his opinion down your throat with a wannabe-tough-guy grunt. His almost-melodic singing voice and raw yell are evidence enough that this guy is really pissed off. The music is heavy enough to match his mood, but it’s not intense enough to give you a headache. In fact, many of the songs on this record are energetic, fist-pumping heavy metal anthems. (Some standout tracks: “Religion Killer,” “Whiskey Youth,” “Thirty Day Notice,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Terrorist,” “Expose the Lies.”) You’ll be singing along with the memorable choruses in no time. This independently released disc is hard to find, but it will be worth the effort for any true heavy metal fan.
