REVIEW: Motive - Worn Down Dream Self-financed, 2003
7/10
Motive - Worn Down Dream - cover art Behold the second offering from Phoenix's thrash outfit Motive. 10 tracks this time, with many noticeable improvements, including everything from song intensity to lyrical content. "Motive To Kill" makes for a good lead-off track, being laced with blackened harmonies and a killer transition into the chorus. The hook is there in "Silicone Mask", a fundamental thrash trait often lost in other forms of metal. Perhaps the band's geographical location should be called upon more often for inspiration, as "Desert Moon" is their best song to date, and features what I would consider their tastiest material and best riffs up to this point. Jue Secody has a bass tone reminiscent of Overkill's DD Verni, a subtlety which really comes to the fore in the pre-thrash section of "Worlds Away". Definitely a step in the right direction by this quartet, and quite the solid slab of prime US thrash metal.
