REVIEW: Mourning Beloveth - Dust Self-financed, 2000
7.5/10
Mourning Beloveth - Dust - cover art In the true spirit of doom metal this album ranges over more than an hour with just five tracks. What struck me at first was the very high sound quality of this recording. It actually sounds as if it was produced and released by a major label like Metal Blade or someone else. That is mighty impressive from a band currently unsigned, which will probably not be the case for very long. Mourning Beloveth has been noted before and their second demo "Autumnal Fires" was chosen as the demo of the year in the German Moondance Magazine in 1998. The reason for the almost perfect production is that the album was recorded at the well-known Academy Studios where the Peaceville producer Mags resides. With such close links to the My Dying Bride environment it might not come as a surprise to you that they are one of the main influences on the band. Mourning Beloveth is an Irish band that has managed to combine the melancholy and sadness of modern My Dying Bride with the tormenting brutality that they showed earlier on in their career. The song structure is very strong and built up as most doom metal music with slow, driving yet heavy rhythms and occational faster more technical riffing. What separates Mourning Beloveth from many others, apart from the mature song writing, is the use of some very effective clean vocals. The growling/clean duet singing on the first track sounds particularly nice. On their earlier recordings the band have apparently also used piano and I wish they had on this one too because that is an instrument I like a lot (if done well of course...). Ireland now has a doom metal band to be proud of.
