Mourning Caress was formed in the autumn of
1998 in Münster, Germany but all of the members have a past in other
German metal bands, none of them being very known though. Under the name
Mourning Caress these five guys have releases two self-produced mini CDs
before signing with the Spanish label Arise Records and now the time has come
for their first label release. This album contains melodic death metal
according to the label and I agree on that but they do not sound like most
such bands. Their sound is less refined than most of the Swedish bands and
there are some influences from dirty rock á la Hellacopters which kind
of spoils it a little for me. I just can't stand that kind of music but
luckily there aren't that much of it in the music of Mourning Caress who
sound more like a mix of old Katatonia and newer Dark Tranquillity. The album
starts off with a beautiful and melancholic melody but unfortunately there is
too little melody and too much noise on this album. If they want to impress on
me in the future they will have to cut the dirty rock sound and focus more on
the melodies. Don't get me wrong, there are melodies on this album but most
of them are quite simple and have already been heard a thousand times before.
The vocals are aggressive but they don't do much for me either. There is a
nice flow in the music though which still makes it pretty enjoyable. The
pretty weird cover art was done by Niklas Sundin of Dark Tranquillity who is
really hitting it off in the graphic art
business.
