Mudhoney from Seattle have been a band longer than most other bands, 18 years to be exact. Their new album “Under A Billion Suns” is the 9th in a row that contain some neo-garage classics. The lyrics are as great as they should be and are as skewed as we are used to. Even the political track “Hard-On for War” has a dirty twist to it (“It’s our patriotic duty/ to make sweet love tonight”), but musically there is something missing. There are some grains of gold here, like the tracks “It Is Us” and “Empty Shells” but other parts of the album are plainer. It feels like the songs have more potential than shows on the record, the heart and parts of the attitude got lost somewhere in the production. This will still be an appealing record to those who already are Mudhoney fans so if you are, this is one album for you. For the rest of us, there will be better and more interesting records.
