In the late 80s there were many American bands rising who mixed fast paced thrashing metal riffs with the raw, primal attitude of punk rock. Do the names D.R.I. and Toxik ring a bell? Well, if they don't then you should brush up your history skills because they were quite influential on many bands later to come. Today there is Municipal Waste, a retro band out of Richmond, Virginia, who released their debut EP in 2001 and are now making their first appearance under the Earache banner. "Hazardous Mutation" is a very straight-forward and upbeat album with an abundance of old-school thrash riffs colored by both punk and hardcore (the latter particularly when it comes to the vocals). Progressionists might complain about the fact that there is absolutely nothing new under the sun but Municipal Waste have deliberately avoided to cross into the unknown or follow trends. This is back to the basics but not just something put together over a weekend. Municipal Waste have composed 16 songs that are good enough to compete with many of the bands in whose footsteps they follow. They are tailor made for mosh pits and headbanging so invite your friends over and join the party because this is an album that shreds. Retro has rarely appeared this current. A very short album but it is so highly charged with energy that the length is of little significance.
