REVIEW: My Darkest Hate - At War Massacre Records, 2004
7.5/10
My Darkest Hate - At War - cover art As many of you probably know by now, My Darkest Hate is a German death metal band made up of Sacred Steel guitarists Jörg M. Knittel and Oliver Grosshaus and former Primal Fear drummer Klaus Sperling among others. Together they have created a massive death metal monster with the purpose to show the world that even Germans can perform this kind of art. Their third album "At War" is definitely able to compete with the best acts of the past, at least to a certain extent. The dark heavy bass driven Bolt Thrower sound has been couple with equal amounts Celtic Frost, Obituary and Massacre and the result is intense, sludgy and enjoyable. It is old-fashioned and straight-forward most of the time but the production is clean, modern and powerful. Radical conservatives will probably have a lot to say about this repulsive act of blasphemy but I personally don't mind at all because this sounds damn good! The songs are memorable and the listener's attention is kept throughout most of the duration of the album. The vocalist is also doing a great job and Chris Simper is a man that was made for death metal. It is a stable and solid album but the song structures are very similar to each other and the old haunting ghost of repetition becomes evident midway into the album. Bolt Thrower can get away with it but My Darkest Hate is still one or two steps behind.
