REVIEW: My Dying Bride - As The Flower Withers Peaceville Records, 1992
9/10
My Dying Bride - As The Flower Withers - cover art As The Flower Withers was the first full-length album from the number one doom metal band from the UK - My Dying Bride. This record is really one of the best debut albums I've ever heard - great melodic heavy doom of the very best kind. The vocals might not be that great - a very dark, raspy growling voice - but they fit the music pretty nicely. The music is very dark and guitar based accompanied by drums - changing from very slow to very fast melodies. The first real track "Sear Me" is a very beautiful symphony and one of the best songs the band has made so far. Lyrically the album is sad and dark, what else could you expect from a doom band? The sound quality might not be the best possible on this album but it is still a very nice debut album from one of the big metal bands during the 90s. I also have to mention the beautiful violin played by Martin Powell. It's sad that he is no longer a part of the band (since his departure he has been working with Anathema and Cradle of Filth). The album was recorded at Academy Studios, produced by Hammy and the band, engineered by Keith Appleton. The cover design was made by Dave McKean.
