It is always with mixed emotions that I listen to a new My Dying Bride album for the first time. First of all I am of course excited as I really have fallen in love with their music. On the other band though I am worried that they will disappoint me for the very first time. I am pretty sure that will happen sooner or later but they luckily managed to postpone my disappointment once more with their new album "Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light". Opening the album is "The Wreackage Of My Flesh" which is one of the darkest songs the British doomsters have created in their entire career. I must honestly admit that I was slightly disappointed the first time I listened to this album but I have revised my opinion a bit now. I still feel that this is the weakest album from the band so far but it definitely breathes My Dying Bride from beginning to end. Aaron's characteristic voice can not be mistaken and even though he lifts some songs up to a higher level the songs are as strong and memorable as they used to be this time around. They are drenched in a gloomy atmosphere but that is not enough, there has to be more of a substance to it and that is where "Songs Of Darkness..." lack a little of what makes every other My Dying Bride album so special. Not bad at all but I hope they will get back on track with their next one.
