REVIEW: My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River Peaceville Records, 1995
9.5/10
My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River - cover art The third full album from the English doom band My Dying Bride is even better than their first two ones. The music is cleaner and more well-produced than on "As The Flower Withers" but it's still the same style - heavy, sad, dark and melodic doom. The vocals are also cleaner now; Aaron uses a kind of deep-throated voice instead of the old growling. There are only six songs on this album but that depends on that they are rather long - three of the songs are nine minutes or longer. My Dying Bride continues to explore human darkness and sorrow on this album. What makes this album even more beautiful is the piano and violin played by Martin Powell - two of the best instruments for creation of emotional music. One of the most beautiful symphonies on this release is the first track The Cry Of Mankind which was elected as the band's best song ever by the visitors on the official website. The album was recorded at Academy Studios, produced by the band and Mags from Peaceville. The cover work and photo on this album was made by the singer Aaron himself.
