Even though the British isles hasn't
brought us much of great interest during the last five years or so they were
once one of the leading metal nations of the world, producing acts like Black
Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Cradle Of Filth, Paradise Lost and, last but not
least, My Dying Bride. After having released the experimental
"34.788%...Complete" in 1998 many people were probably worried about the
future of the band. Even though I find that album to be a very good one and
unique in its own way it might not exactly be what MDB fans appreciate the
most. "The Light At The End Of The World" takes us back to the old sound but
only partly since this is a band that never stands still musically speaking.
While not forgetting their roots they are moving forward with each new album
and this is one of the reasons why I like My Dying Bride so much. It is not
easy to develop your sound and still stay unique but they manage to do so.
"The Light At The End Of The World" is to my ears the most coherent and well
written album that the band has ever produced, pushing the limits of death /
doom metal even further. They alternate between aggressive speed and slow
dismal sounds with exquisite perfection and Aaron is also making himself heard
with both growling and clean vocals. The layer of emotions running through
this album from beginning to end is so thick that you can almost feel it with
your hand. Love, death, passion, hate, desire, tragedy, you name it and it's
all there. My Dying Bride have an unexplainable talent for creating a unique
atmosphere that no other band can even come close
to.
