REVIEW: My Ruin - The Brutal Language Undergroove Records, 2005
7/10
My Ruin - The Brutal Language - cover art When My Ruin were about to record the album “The Brutal Language”, living legend Tairrie B (Tura Satana/Manhole) and her guitarist Mick Murphy found themselves as the only members left in the band. Luckily for us, this did not keep them from completing the recordings and “The Brutal Language” is thus the work of a duo. And there is much that has changed on this record; although Tairrie B still has got intensity and energy in her voice, there is not as much rage as there use to be. The opening track is a spoken cover of David Bowie’s 'Nature Boy' that (as we all know) contains the lyrics “The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return”. That is not the Tairrie that we’re used to. The sound has changed as well and My Ruin incorporates new influences to their metal. The music bounces between different metal genres, stoner grooves and sludge, making the songs shift in mood and be more diverse than on previous albums. This is the best record so far released under the name My Ruin, despite (or perhaps due to) the fact that they were just two this time. (After the album was done the lost members were replaced so now the band is four again.) The lively cover of Mudhoney's classic 'Touch Me I'm Sick' will please many rock fans and all in all, this is an album that will appeal to many of us.
