REVIEW: Mykorrhiza - Mykorrhiza (EP) Konqueror Records, 2002
7.5/10
Mykorrhiza - Mykorrhiza (EP) - cover art I don't know if this mini album is actually called "Mykorrhiza" but that is my guess at least. This new Swedish band consists of Henrik "Hempa" Brynolfsson from the recently resurrected Excruciate on guitars and bass, Anders Strokirk from Blackshine on vocals and Martin Karlsson on drums. I know very little about the band but I think this is their first recording and even though it is being released through the small Singapore based label Konqueror Records it should be looked upon more as a good demo cd. As you may or may not know Blackshine started out as a death metal band under the name Hetsheads back in the golden days for Swedish death metal and Anders Strokirk has now found a band where he can return to his roots. Mykorrhiza play brutal, intense and ultra-dynamic death metal in the Necrophobic vein. The thing that gives this band a somewhat different overall sound is that Strokirk varies his voice a lot from distorted screams to death growls to semi-clean ones. The album was recorded at Studio Blackshine and even though it is a rather rough production it sounds great. One of the most promising "newcomer" bands I've heard in a while. They will probably not be offered a deal by Hammerheart or Steamhammer / SPV but I think other companies would want a band to compete with Necrophobic. A record contract should not be far away for these guys. Stand-out track: "Going Away", "Another Dimension".
